Don't you just hate it when you see someone who seems to be able to eat anything they like and stay as lean as a garden rake? Some people have naturally high metabolic rates, which allows them to burn off calories at much higher rates than the rest of us. Most of us weren't born with this fat burning gift however and some of us find it very hard to keep our weight down. Yes it's not easy but it certainly isn't impossible either. If you think that diets don't work for you then read on.

Just as there are some people with naturally high metabolic rates there are people who have very low metabolic rates who find it very difficult to control their weight. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle and have to at least watch what we eat to avoid weight gain in the form of unsightly fat. Everyone can lose weight and control it no matter what you metabolism throws at you. You can lose weight but there is no such thing as a free lunch, you will need to work at it.

Why diet don't work

This is a bit of a fallacy I think. Diets do work if they're used properly but they may not give you the results that you expect. You might find for instance that you lose weight initially but then you 'plateau' and find it very difficult to lose more. Most popular diets don't work to encourage permanent weight loss either. Most people will put the weight straight back on after the diet has finished.

Another reason why diets don't work is because people don't understand, or don't want to understand how to use them. I can't tell you how many overweight people I've spoken to that have said, "Why can't I lose weight" when the reason is blatantly obvious. They go on diets and use meal replacements and slimming foods but they seem to think that they can still eat what they usually eat in addition to the slimming food.

You can lose weight

Yes you can, it's a fact, you can lose weight. You might have to work at it more than some but it is possible. How do I know this? Ask yourself what would happen if you ate nothing at all for a week or two. You will probably damage your body if you did this so please don't try it. In addition to becoming ill you would lose weight, there is no doubt about that at all. So how do you lose weight safely?

Losing weight and fat is a matter of balancing your lifestyle. You will lose weight if you burn more calories in exercise than you consume in your food. So the answer is good nutrition and exercise. Educate yourself about good nutrition and reduce the amount of calories that you consume each day. At the same time take up some exercise that you can do on a regular basis. Jogging, walking, cycling etc. Many say that you should train with weights too but you can leave that until you feel ready. It's much more important to find something that you can do regularly at least 3 times a week and keep it going. Some of the healthiest people I know walk their dogs twice a day.

The most important thing to realise is that you are responsible for your body and all it's fat and that you can control it by making some permanent changes to your lifestyle. If you do this you will see positive changes in your life. You'll look great, feel better and live longer.

Laughter and Health!

We've long known that the ability to laugh is helpful to those coping with major illness and the stress of life's problems. But researchers are now saying laughter can do a lot more -- it can basically bring balance to all the components of the immune system, which helps us fight off diseases.

As we mentioned earlier, laughter reduces levels of certain stress hormones. In doing this, laughter provides a safety valve that shuts off the flow of stress hormones and the fight-or-flight compounds that swing into action in our bodies when we experience stress, anger or hostility. These stress hormones suppress the immune system, increase the number of blood platelets (which can cause obstructions in arteries) and raise blood pressure. When we're laughing, natural killer cells that destroy tumors and viruses increase, as do Gamma-interferon (a disease-fighting protein), T-cells, which are a major part of the immune response, and B-cells, which make disease-destroying antibodies.

Laughter may lead to hiccuping and coughing, which clears the respiratory tract by dislodging mucous plugs. Laughter also increases the concentration of salivary immunoglobulin A, which defends against infectious organisms entering through the respiratory tract.

What may surprise you even more is the fact that researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Laughing can be a total body workout! Blood pressure is lowered, and there is an increase in vascular blood flow and in oxygenation of the blood, which further assists healing. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. That's why you often feel exhausted after a long bout of laughter -- you've just had an aerobic workout!

The psychological benefits of humor are quite amazing, according to doctors and nurses who are members of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor. People often store negative emotions, such as anger, sadness and fear, rather than expressing them. Laughter provides a way for these emotions to be harmlessly released. Laughter is cathartic. That's why some people who are upset or stressed out go to a funny movie or a comedy club, so they can laugh the negative emotions away (these negative emotions, when held inside, can cause biochemical changes that can affect our bodies).

Increasingly, mental health professionals are suggesting "laughter therapy," which teaches people how to laugh -- openly -- at things that aren't usually funny and to cope in difficult situations by using humor. Following the lead of real-life funny-doc Patch Adams (portrayed by Robin Williams in a movie by the same name), doctors and psychiatrists are becoming more aware of the therapeutic benefits of laughter and humor. This is due, in part, to the growing body of humor and laughter scholarship (500 academicians from different disciplines belong to the International Society for Humor Studies).

Here are some tips to help you put more laughter in your life:

Figure out what makes you laugh and do it (or read it or watch it) more often.

Surround yourself with funny people -- be with them every chance you get.

Develop your own sense of humor. Maybe even take a class to learn how to be a better comic -- or at least a better joke-teller at that next party. Be funny every chance you get -- as long as it's not at someone else's expense!

They lose all their excitement and self-confidence and begin to think of all the reasons why they cant succeed this time, when they have failed before, instead of the reasons they can succeed in their new healthy life plan. They have let the negative attitude of someone else become more powerful than their belief in their dream of a thinner, fitter person, whose health is greatly improved.
Friends can do more damage than a dozen enemies. Remember, the easiest thing to find on earth is someone to tell you all the things you cannot be. Dont listen to them. Often they have the best intentions. They dont want you to be hurt or disappointed. Sometimes they have a vested interest in you remaining overweight and perhaps less attractive. Often those that try to steal your dreams are really thinking of themselves.
If you have a dream of a new you give it a chance to happen. Dont let your sister-in-law, the plumber or the person in the next office, rob you of that faith in yourself and your new body shape. It is that belief in your dream that makes it into a reality. Dont let the person who lives on the couch and watches TV every night tell you how futile life is.

Dont take on other peoples negative attitudes. Surround yourself with positive people. Read inspiring authors. A few suggestions are Susan Jeffers, Paul Hanna, Anthony Robbins and Jim Rohn. Spend at least half an hour a day nourishing your dream. Believe in yourself and you will make your dreams a reality.

If you have that flame of a dream deep down inside you somewhere, do something about it. And dont let anyone else blow it out. Believe you can, and you will find you can. TRY! You will be surprised at how many good things can happen to you.
