For your validation of the effectiveness of ionic silver, our trusted NASA proved that 40 parts per billion (one ounce of 5 PPM ionic silver to every gallon of water) controls and/or prevents bacterial growth, so uses it to treat potable water for all space travel. Also, the Allegheny County Pennsylvania Health Department conducted a test on a 152,000 gallon public pool for an entire season. The average bather load was 200 people per day. The only disinfectant used was 20 PPB of silver. The health department found the water totally free of coliform, pseudomonas and staphylococcus bacteria throughout the season, whereas (65) water samples from (30) other chlorine treated swimming pools in Allegheny County, having a mean concentration of 0.70 ppm of chlorine, did routinely show the presence of bacteria.
At 20 PPB, you can thus treat a pool or spa with one gallon of 5 PPM ionic silver per each 250 gallons of water, to gain total control for an extended period of time, it nor being volitile like chlorine.
Since a percentage of ionic silver will complex with the many dissolved minerals in pool water and form very slowly dissolving silver salts (dissolution of a salt in water releases ions) you do not need to add much after the initial shock like treatment for maintenance. Further it is highly residual, not burning off like volatile chlorine. In my 10,000 gallon pool, which has remained crystal clear for 8 years I now add only a gallon of ionic silver per month, not because needed but because I feel I should, in case the filter removed some. Pools with more active use and heavier bather loads would likely need more.
There are copper and silver ion generators on the market for insertion in the circulation pump line but rarely used any more as they have no control over output so easily build up very excessive levels which will discolor the pool walls in time.
The classic visual pathogenic test for any pool is that if the drain appears crystal clear (I.E. not cloudy water) you have pathogens under control.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limits (safe level) silver in drinking water to 100 parts per billion, much more then needed in a pool for typical control to exceed chlorines benefits!
The Silver Institute , Washington, D.C., issued a report showing that a 20,000 gallon pool in Lincoln, Nebraska, infused with 50 gallons of sewer effluent was purified to a zero level with only 3.2 ppb of silver in the water as the disinfectant!
Tests performed by Dr. Friede at Villanova University showed that in swimming pool water containing ammonia (a typical swimming pool condition) silver was a much faster and more effective sanitizer than chlorine.
Many suggest you do a periodic chlorine (or ozone) shock treatment to "digest" protein from saliva, skin, etc. as protein is the normal food for bacteria but I have not for years and in fact swept the dead bugs to the deep end for a whole year to test if a problem and they were not, still crystal clear and odor free water!
Colloidal silver can be made at home for as little as 75 cents a gallon, so far cheaper then weekly chlorine applications and utterly safe.
