HealthWedding Day Health Tips

"Hold on to the center and make up your mind to rejoice in this paradise called life.?

Lao-tzu

6th century BC Chinese philosopher, founder of Taoism

Who do you think is more beautiful, a person wearing tons of makeup, or someone who radiates health and confidence?

We hope you chose the naturally healthy and confident woman.

At one wedding, one bride had decided that she was going to be the perfect princess on her wedding day. She bought lots of new makeup and learned how to apply it. That morning, it all went on her face: the foundation, blusher, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara, lip-liner, lipstick and eyebrow color. The problem was, her groom had chosen a natural, athletic, outdoorsy woman to marry. When she appeared, he looked shocked and it registered clearly on his face. The whole emotional tone of the wedding went down the drain. At the wedding reception there were countless comments about how the bride was barely recognizable.

Be yourself on your wedding day! Don?t choose that day to go for a radical new look. If you already wear a lot of makeup, don?t go bare that day. If you usually don?t wear any makeup, spring for a nice lip gloss.

Rather than using a lot of extra makeup on your wedding day, how about paying extra attention to your health in the weeks and months before the wedding?

? Start with lots of water. Most people are dehydrated. No, coffee, soda or alcohol doesn?t count. In fact, for every cup of coffee, alcohol or soda you consume, you?ll need to add an extra glass of water!

? Don?t go on a starvation diet. You may end up a few pounds lighter, but you?ll look haggard and tired. The wrong diet can play havoc with your emotions. Concentrate on including some healthy foods in your diet. A simple glass of orange juice delivers a tremendous amount of nutrition to your body. Every time you pick up something to eat, ask yourself: is this going to make me look more or less beautiful on my wedding day?

? Exercise! We know, who has time to exercise when planning a wedding? But take a good walk every day. It will help balance your mind and your body.

? Take a good vitamin every day. We all know we need extra nutrition when we?re facing something big. Add some antioxidants- vitamins c, e and b. They?ll help your skin look more radiant, and boost your energy.

? Get your hair trimmed- no, don?t go for the big haircut or color change the day before the wedding. Be who you are. Aim for healthy, shiny hair. Find a good stylist if you don?t already have one. If you?re going to go with an updo for the wedding, make a few appointments with him or her to practice. Take some pictures of yourself with the updo. Make sure you make a choice that reflects who you are.

? Get plenty of sleep. There may be lots of social events connected with your wedding. It may be challenging to get enough sleep. Set a bedtime and try to stick to it. Rested=Relaxed=Radiant.

? Practice breathing. Yes, that?s what we said! Most people breathe high in their upper chest. The result is rapid, shallow breathing. One of the most effective methods for increasing your health and vitality is to breathe! Try this: lay on your bed with a hand over your belly button. Breathe in a way that makes your hand go up and down. See if you can slow and deepen your breath. The more you?re able to breathe, the easier it will be to deal with your emotions.

? Spend time with your groom just having fun! Planning a wedding does not have to consume your life. Being with the man of your dreams is a natural calmative. Having fun releases endorphins in your brain- endorphins relax, calm and allow you to feel happy.

? Find someone trustworthy with whom you can share your feelings about the wedding and this transition in your life. Usually, this needs to be a girlfriend. We can tell you that the vast majority of grooms have very little interest in the fine details of the wedding. And trying to explain your emotions about getting married to the groom is guaranteed to set off a lot of insecurity in both of you.

This is a huge step in your life. Getting married is bound to set off a lot of feelings. That?s normal within a certain range.

Be yourself! You?ll be more grounded and relaxed so that you can radiate confidence and really be able to share your love with your groom at this special, wonderful and important time!

Lavender FlowersChocolate- the Newest Health Food?

There are now even more reasons for chocolate lovers to rejoice! As more amazing research news comes in about chocolate, the substance is moving from a bad-for-you candy to an important health food. Those of us who had always continued to indulge in occasional chocolate treats can stop feeling guilty and now easily justify our cravings.

You may have already heard that chocolate contains beneficial flavonoids and antioxidents. Flavonoids are naturally-occurring compounds found in plant foods that are full of recognized health benefits. There are more than 4,000 flavonoid compounds, which are a subgroup of a large class called polyphenols. Phenols are believed to help reduce the risk of heart disease by helping prevent atherosclerosis. The flavanols in chocolate appear to help the body use nitric oxide, which is crucial for healthy blood flow and blood pressure, which means that chocolate might help reduce hypertension as well.

Red wine is know for its high phenol content, but an average bar of dark chocolate contains more phenols than 8 ounces of red wine. Scientists at Cornell University and Seoul National University examined the cancer-fighting antioxidant content of hot cocoa, red wine, and tea, and found that cocoa had nearly double the antioxidants of red wine and four to five times more than tea.

Holland's National Institute of Public Health and Environment found that dark chocolate contains 53.5 mg of catechins per 100 grams. (Catechins are the powerful antioxidants that fight against cancer and help prevent heart disease). By contrast, a cup of black tea contains only about 14 mg of catechins and green tea has about 30 mg of catechins.

A study at University of California Davis found that participants who ate chocolate showed a reduction in platelet activity. This means that chocolate has an anti-clotting, blood-thinning effect that can be compared to aspirin.

A Harvard University study of 8,000, with an average age of 65, revealed that those who consumed chocolate lived almost a year longer than those who did not. Those who ate one to three candy bars per month had a 36 percent lower risk of death (compared to the people who ate no candy), while those who ate three or more candy bars per week had a 16 percent lower risk.

A study of older men in The Netherlands, known for its chocolate, showed that those who ate the most chocolate, an equivalent of one-third of a chocolate bar every day, had lower blood pressure and a 50 percent lower risk of death. The researchers also noted the men eating the most cocoa products were not heavier or bigger eaters than the men who ate less cocoa.

And it's not just dark chocolate that is the only healthy type of chocolate. Most studies talk about the benefits of dark chocolate, but some of the most recent news about chocolate includes good news for milk chocolate lovers, who have been left out in the past.

The Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia did a study that shows that milk chocolate seems to boost brainpower. The groups in the test consumed, on different occasions, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, carob and nothing. Then they were tested for cognitive performance including memory, attention span, reaction time, and problem solving.

According to Dr. Bryan Raudenbush, "Composite scores for verbal and visual memory were significantly higher for milk chocolate than the other conditions." The study also found that consumption of milk and dark chocolate was associated with improved impulse control and reaction time. It seems that by consuming chocolate you get stimulating effects from substances found in chocolate, such as theobromine and phenylethylamine, which then lead to increased mental performance.

Chocolate really does make you feel good, too. It is known to stimulate the secretion of endorphins, producing a pleasurable sensation similar to the "runner's high" a jogger feels after running several miles. Chocolate also contains a neurotransmitter, serotonin that acts as an anti-depressant. Studies in England show that even the aroma of chocolate gives a bout of euphoria and will help lift the spirits.

And now people are looking at chocolate for skin care. According to Marlies Spinale, director of Tru Spa, "Like many other antioxidants, cocoa polyphenols are thought to offer the skin protection from free-radical damage caused by sun, pollution, stress, alcohol consumption and other factors. I believe that we will hear more about the benefits of chocolate in skin care."

Some people have been avoiding chocolate because one of the main ingredients of chocolate is cocoa butter. It was thought that it was an unhealthy fat, but actually cocoa butter is not unhealthy. It is made up of the beneficial fatty acids-- oleic acid (a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat also found in olive oil), stearic and palmitic acids. Stearic and palmitic acids are healthy forms of saturated fat. Plus chocolate contains vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E, as well as potassium, sodium, and iron.

So go ahead and indulge in a little chocolate, in moderation of course. I would recommend that you try to find organic chocolate, and stick with darker chocolate because it has more chocolate flavonoids and less sugar. (Sugar weakens the immune system; so don't consume sugar if you are ill.) And a little bit of milk chocolate is alright when you need an occasional milk chocolate brainpower boost, such as before a test. All you students take note!

A blog about Carob Powder

Carob PowderHealthcare cost rises to almost $2 trillion

U.S. spending on healthcare peaked at nearly 2 trillion dollars in 2005. The annual report from the National Health Statistics group was released on Tuesday, and stated the main culprits responsible for the increased healthcare cost include doctor?s fees, prescription drugs, and hospital fees.

Healthcare spending rose from 1.86 to 1.99 trillion growing at a 1% slower pace that the previous year. M&C news reported, ?Leading the increase were hospital services, which grew 7.9 percent to $611.6 billion and accounted for 31 percent of all U.S. health care dollars in 2005. Rising labor costs amid a sustained worker shortage were major factors, according to the report, one of the most comprehensive available. Doctor and clinical services rose 7 percent to $421.1 billion, while nursing home and related care went up 6 percent to $121.9 billion.?

Prescription drug spending increased to 200.7 billion but was slowed by less use of pain relievers like Merck?s blockbuster drug Vioxx that was removed from the market.

Although spending on some medication was slowed, according to M&C, ?medication costs contributed largely to the growing share of costs for those covered by private health insurance plans in 2005, the report said. At the same time, brand name prescription drug prices raised an average of 6 percent. Even as the rate of growth for insurance plan premiums slowed, findings showed consumer out-of-pocket spending rose amid growing drug costs, followed by doctor and dental services.?

Although it made up just 1.2% of total healthcare spending, the cost of prescription drugs under the program raised the most, 19.2%. These totals included the new Medicare drug cards but excluded the full benefit that began in January of 06.
